Abstract
1427369 Strands B GOLDMANN 19 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 58915/73 Heading A4H [Also in Division E2] A collapsible rod, e.g. a photographic stand, is made up of a series of cylindrical elements 1, 1', 1" which are pulled together with their shaped ends interlocking to form a rigid rod by tensioning a cord 5, and in addition, cores 3 are caused to slide to positions in which they bridge the joints to provide additional rigidity. Axial movement of the cores is produced by a sliding tappet 7 which is moved inwardly when the cord is pulled, and this axial movement may be limited by a pin 21 acting in a slot 22. The photographic stand shown in Fig. 3, has a point 13 for insertion into the ground, and a cord-pulling handle 15 on its side. In a modified form, Fig. 6, the cores are caused to rotate as they slide to their fastening position by making the slot 22 helical, this causing teeth 24 on the cores to bind in ramp surfaces 23 to give additional rigidity. Plate-like elements may be jointed in a similar way using several cords and cores.
