Abstract

1427356 Urethane elastomers DOW CHEMICAL CO 27 Feb 1973 9539/73 Heading C3R A rapidly-setting urethane elastomer is obtained by reacting together (A) a liquid polyether polyol or ester-modified polyether polyol containing 3 or 4 hydroxyl groups per molecule and having a molecular weight of at least 2000, (B) a liquid accelerator-extender which is glycerine, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol or the reaction product of glycerine or pentaerythritol with an alkylene oxide or an epihalohydrin in proportions to provide 1 to 2 moles of alkylene oxide or epihalohydrin per hydroxy group in the glycerine or pentaerythritol, and (C) a liquid isocyanate-terminated prepolymer having an isocyanate content of 10 to 50 weight per cent which is the reaction product of a polyisocyanate with a polyol having a hydroxyl functionality of 2 to 3 and a molecular weight of 62 to 600, in the presence of (D) an organo metallic catalyst, (A) and (B) being present in proportions to provide a hydroxyl equivalent ratio (B) to (A) of 1 to less than 20, (C) being present in a proportion to provide an isocyanate to total hydroxyl of (A) and (B) ratio of 0À75 to 1À5 and (D) being present in a proportion to provide at least 0À3% of the sum of the weights of (A), (B), (C) and (D). In examples (A) is polyoxypropylene glycol, a reaction product of glycerine with propylene oxide, a reaction product of p,p<SP>1</SP>-isopropylidene-diphenol with ethylene oxide, and a polyether triol; (B) is triethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropyllene glycol, glycerine and a reaction pro duct of glycerine with propylene oxide; (C) is a reaction product of dipropylene glycol with toluene diisocyanate, a reaction product of glycerine with propylene oxide further reacted with toluene diisocyanate and a reaction product of a novolac polyol with ethylene oxide further reacted with toluene diisocyanate; and (D) is lead octoate and dibutyltin dilaurate.
