Abstract
1426955 Spot-type disc brakes; cooling; slack-adjusting T C MARTIN 8 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 11358/73 Heading F2E A disc brake and wheel assembly for a vehicle, such as a motor cycle, having a wheel fork with parallel legs 7 comprises a wheel hub 3 having an apertured core 13 in which a fixed axle 6 is supported by ball-bearing races 18, a disc 27 being secured to the hub 3 to rotate therewith and being engaged upon braking by pads 38, 39, located in calipers 29, 30, which calipers are supported by a drum 30A fixed relative to the axle 6. Drum 30A consists of annular wall members 32, 33, supported on rotatable core 13 by bearing races 42, member 33 being splined at 43 to engage an annular flange of a face-plate 31 securing the drum against rotation, the face-plate torque being taken up by a torque take-up 48 and connecting rod (48A), Fig. 1 (not shown). An opening 19 is provided for access to the interior 20 of the hub and in the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 a fluid pressure actuator is provided in each caliper 29, 30, which may be hydraulic and to which access is afforded by opening 19. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, a single hydraulic actuator is provided on only one side of the disc to apply one pad 39, the other pad 38 being applied by caliper reaction, the annular core being a sliding splined fit in an annular collar 53 of plate 31. Springs 54 are located between the collar and bosses 52 to return the core to its initial position after brake operation. Two hydraulic piston- 92A, 93A, and cylinder- 92, 93, actuators and return springs 94, 96, may be provided as shown in Fig. 11, the pad 38 being adjusted for wear by shafts 102, 103, threaded through the caliper 57 and engaging the pad 38. Shafts 102, 103, have knobs 104, 105, manually operated through a special tool, Fig. 13 (not shown). The pads are guided on pins 99 which pass through liners 101 provided in recesses in the calipers. The other pad is adjusted by rotation of shaft threadedly passing through caliper 56 and engaging pad 39. The adjusting tool comprises shafts (111), (112) having hexagonal heads respectively engaging hexagonal holes (106), Fig. 12 (not shown), provided in the knobs 104, 105, the shafts (111), (112) being secured to gears (116), (117) which engage a central gear secured to an operating shaft (119). Cooling fins 24 are provided and in one embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), cooling vents (66), in the crown 22 on which fins 24 are formed, and to which disc 27 is attached by bolts 28, are provided extending towards the annular core. The disc may have aluminium friction facings.
