Abstract
1426658 Heat-shrunk packages CHARTER MFG CO Inc 25 Jan 1974 03554/74 Heading B8C [Also in Division F2] Two or more fastening elements, at least one of which has a threaded portion, are held together in a predetermined relationship prior to and during initial assembly on a related threaded fastener by a shrunk-on sleeve of shrinkable film material which leaves the threaded portion exposed, the sleeve being broken prior to final tightening of the assembly. The sleeve may be of heat-shrinkable plastics material such as cellulose, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride, or polyethylene terephthalate, shrunk by radiant heat or hot air, or a film which shrinks in air and is stored in liquid prior to use may be employed. In Fig. 1, a turntable 10 has upwardly projecting mandrels 12-34 spaced around it. A nut 42, a lock washer 44, and a plain washer 46 are placed on each mandrel, either manually or mechanically, at successive stations A, B, C. A sleeve 48 is dropped over them at D (Fig. 5). The assembly is then carried past a radiant electric heater 40 under a hood 38 to shrink the sleeve 48 over the nut and washer assembly, which is removed from the mandrel at E. Other assemblies, such as a bolt and lock washer, Fig. 9, or a nut, two plain washers and a spring therebetween (Fig. 7, not shown) may be packaged by a shrunk-on sleeve using suitably modified apparatus.
