Abstract

1426475 Light guides PLESSEY CO Ltd 20 May 1974 [21 June 1973] 29483/73 Heading G2J An optical fibre switching device which includes first and second terminations 61, 62 of optical fibres 2 comprises over-lapping resilient reeds 41, 42, for controlling the relative physical positions of the terminations to control the passage of light therebetween. The fibres 2 may be bundles or single fibres, and in the embodiment shown part of the cladding 3 has been removed over the length L so that the exposed cores contact each other, Fig. 4b (not shown), when the switch is closed. The reeds may be flexed manually by a push button or electromagnetically and in other embodiments. Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) the fibres abut each other end-to-end at (7). The device may comprise three fibres (11, 12, 13) see Fig. 3, light being passed alternatively from (11) to (12) or (13)
