Abstract

142,630. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). April 8, 1919. Regulation, automatic systems and apparatus for.-A vibrating regulator ior electric generators comprises the usual voltage-sensitive coil, an anti-hunting coil carrying a current proportional to the exciting-current, and a third coil which also carries a current proportional to the exciting-current, and is arranged to compensate the effect of the anti.hunting coil, so that at high loads, the voltage need not decrease, but may even be maintained higher than its normal value. As applied to a continuous-current generator, the anti-hunting and compensating coils 19, 23, Fig. 1, are in shunt to the shunt field 4 and, with the voltage coil 18, control the vibrating lever 16 which makes and breaks the circuit of the field resistance relay 13. The compensating-coil 23 acts on the lever through the spring 21, and is damped by a dash-pot 22. Adjustable resistances 27, 28, 29 are included in the coil circuits. As applied to an alternating-current generator, a counterelectromotive force machine 40 has its armature in series with the field coil 39 of the exciter 38, the resistance 57 controlled by the vibrating regulator 50 being in circuit with the field 42 of the counter machine. The regulator has a voltage coil 51, an anti-hunting coil 59 energized only when the contacts 55, 56 are closed, and a compensating-coil 60 also in series with the shunt field; an adjustable impedance 61 controls the effect of the winding 60. An eddy-current brake 44 energized by the exciter retards the machine 40. The brushes of this machine are adjustable, and its armature may be shunted by an adjustable resistance 58. On a variable in voltage, the period during which the resistance 57 is in series with the winding 42 is varied, and consequently the excitation of the machine altered; the counter-electromotive force in the circuit of the field 39 is adjusted, and therefore the excitation of the generator is adjusted to compensate for the variation. Specification 21914/02 is referred to.
