Abstract
1425869 Polycrystalline ceramic fibres ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 18 June 1973 [6 July 1972] 28796/73 Heading C1A Polycrystalline ceramic fibres of ceramicallybonded particles are made by (1) forming elongate green thread from a slip comprising 5-80 wt. per cent of ceramic particles of median diameter 3 microns or less dispersed in a volatile organic solvent containing a linear ethylene oxide polymer of average mol. wt. at least 400,000 in an amount of 0À5-5 wt. per cent of the solvent, (2) concurrently with forming the thread, displacing it through an evaporative environment to evaporate enough solvent from the thread to make it substantially self-supporting and (3) firing the thread. Specified ceramics are zirconia, zircon, magnesia, chromia, iron oxide, spinel or combinations thereof. Alpha phase alumina is exemplified. The volatile solvent may be trichloroethylene or ethylene dichloride, and the slip may also contain, adispersant, an additional resinous binder, and plasticizer and an additional solvent therefor. The slip is preferably made by mixing ethylene oxide polymer and ceramic particles with separate portions of solvent, and then combining the two. The green thread may be formed by extruding the slip centrifugally, or by pressing through a perforated plate or tubular nozzle, and then simultaneously dried and attenuated by winding on a drum spaced from the extrusion orifice by heated air. An accumulation of fibres may then be removed from the drum by slicing parallel to the drum axis, the resulting fibre lengths then being sintered. The slip is preferably filtered before extrusion.
