Abstract

1425537 Concentric-tube heat exchangers; refrigerating SIEMENS AG 6 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 25254/74 Headings F4H and F4S In an arrangement in which a cryogenic coolant such as liquid helium is supplied through a tube 8 to an electrical device 23 having high voltage conductors requiring a low temperature coolant, the coolant tube 8 is encircled by a fluid-cooled radiation shield 12, the whole being enclosed in a vacuum vessel 10, and the cooling medium flow through the radiation shield comprising at least one outward flow generally parallel to the coolant flow through the tube 8, and at least one return flow in the opposite direction. The vessel 10 may be a "sealed" vacuum vessel or it may be a vessel connected to an evacuation source, e.g. via a connection 11. As shown, the radiation shield comprises a concentric-tube assembly providing therein flow and return paths 13, 17, respectively, for a cooling medium such as liquid nitrogen or liquid hydrogen. The radiation shield is spaced from both the tube 8 and the wall of the vessel 10 by members 21 shaped as shown. The tube 8 and/or the radiation shield 12 and/or the vessel 10 are made preferably of an electrically insulating material such as glass (e.g. molybdenum lead glass), quartz, a ceramic material, or a suitable plastics material. 7 and 22 are bellows type expansion compensators. The delivery pressure of the coolant passing to the device 23 via the tube 8 may be generated by a pressure bottle 3 and/or by a pump 24.
