Abstract

1424941 Removal of sulphur oxides PULLMAN Inc 4 Jan 1974 00343/74 Heading C1A A process for removing oxides of sulphur from industrial waste gas comprises: scrubbing said waste gas in a contacting zone with an aqueous medium having a pH below 7À1 containing calcium carbonate, carbon dioxide and at least 3 wt. per cent of one of sodium, lithium, potassium, magnesium and ammonium sulphates; precipitating solids comprising calcium sulphate and/or calcium sulphite from the aqueous medium; removing a portion of said solids; and introducing a further portion of said solids with said aqueous medium to the contacting zone. Preferably the concentration of soluble sulphate in the aqueous medium is in the range 5 to 27 wt. per cent; the waste gas and the aqueous medium are contacted in a Venturi scrubber for less than 3 seconds; and the temperature of the contacting zone lies between 100‹ and 180‹ F., the pressure therein being 12 to 18 p.s.i.a. In an improved embodiment of the process, at least part of the aqueous medium is recovered as an aqueous supernatant liquor containing at least 3 wt. per cent of one of the above-mentioned soluble sulphates, and said aqueous supernatant is separately introduced to the contacting zone. When the waste gas contains free oxygen or sulphur trioxide the soluble sulphates may be generated in situ by the addition of ammonia or the oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulphite or bisulphite of sodium, lithium, potassium, magnesium or ammonium or mixtures thereof.
