Abstract

PIONEER ELECTRONIC CORP 25 Jan 1973 [26 Jan 1972] 3956/73 Heading G5R [Also in Division H3] An electrical device for detecting the imminent end of a tape in a tape recorder senses the increasing rotational speed of the tape supply reel and produces an output when it exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, a switch S is provided on the supply reel shaft 4 and is switched at a rate proportional to the rotational speed. The switch S may include a brush, or may be a magnetically-operated reed switch. When the switch S opens, a capacitor C3 charges towards the Zener voltage of Zener diode ZD2, but is normally prevented from reaching it by a capacitor C2, which, when switch S is next closed and transistor Tr1 is turned off, charges and reaches the Zener voltage of Zener diode ZD1 first, thus turning on transistor Tr2 and discharging capacitor C3. When the switch S is next opened, Tr1 is turned on, C2 is thus discharged and Tr2 turned off, permitting C3 to charge again. At sufficiently high switching rates, capacitor C2 never reaches Zener voltage ZD1, so that Tr2 is always off and C3 is allowed to reach Zeher voltage ZD2, thus turning on transistor Tr3. The load L may be a lamp, or a relay which actuates another tape recorder.
