1424575 Shaft seals REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 1 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 18524/73 Heading F2B In a floating bushing seal, e.g. for a hydrogen cooled alternator, pads 12 are carried on a flexible band 15, which seals an annular lubricant chamber 14 and the lubricant chamber is in fluid communication with the seal interface. To provide a sufficient flow of lubricant for there to be a cooling effect on the gas side of the seal, an axial groove (22, Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) is formed on the atmospheric side. Leakage of oil, due to thermal expansion of the shaft 10, is minimized by using a multiplicity (e.g. 10) pads, so that the increase in the gap between each pair of pads is minimal. A white metal bearing surface 13 is provided and the small circumferential extent of each pad allows each to tilt slightly to form a hydrodynamic lubricating film.
