Abstract

1424457 Pressure swing absorption UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972] 3508/73 Heading B1L An adiabatic pressure-swing separation of air by selectively absorbing nitrogen takes place alternately in at least three zeolitic molecularsieve absorption beds at ambient temperatures. In a cycle in which each bed assumes the position of a first bed in turn air is fed to the inlet of a first bed at highest superatmospheric pressure of 40-105 psia with nitrogen being absorbed and oxygen being discharged. At least part of this oxygen from the discharge end of the first bed is fed to a purged bed for partial repressurisation. The first bed is then depressurised to a lower superatmospheric pressure of 16-40 psia which releases oxygen from the first bed discharge end, part of which oxygen is used as product and the balance is used to repressurise or purge the other beds. The first bed is now depressurised by releasing waste gas, mainly nitrogen and subsequently introducing oxygen from another bed discharge to the discharge end of the first bed as a purge gas and following therethrough at a lowest superatmospheric pressure to desorb the nitrogen as waste gas. Oxygen is now introduced from another absorption bed at a pressure above said lowest superatmospheric pressure to at least partially repressurise the purged first bed and then the feed air is introduced to repeat the cycle. The ratio of the pressure of feed air to the first cocurrent depressurisation termination pressure is at least 1.5. The oxygen mass relationship of feed oxygen: oxygen gas from the first bed discharge end: oxygen return gas is 1:5 to 13.5:4 to 13.1.
