Abstract

1424266 Alkyd resin-addition polymer condensates VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 25 May 1973 [26 Feb 1973] 25212/73 Headings C3R and C3P A process for the preparation of a condensate suitable for use as a paint vehicle comprises reacting (a) 30-90% by weight of an oil modified or oil-free alkyd resin having a hydroxyl number of from 40 to 250 mg. KOH/g. with (b) 10-70% by weight of a resin obtained by the polymerization of unsaturated monomers having a content of 0.3 to 2À0 m-equivalents/g. of resin solids of N-alkoxymethyl carboxylic acid amide groups, at 100‹ to 180‹ C. in the presence of a solvent. The examples describe producing condensates from (a) alkyd resins derived from (i) soya oil fatty acid, phthalic anhydride and pentaerythritol, (ii) sunflower oil fatty acids, dehydrated castor oil fatty acids, glycerol and phthalic anhydride, (iii) soya bean oil, pentaerythritol, glycerol and phthalic anhydride and (iv) dehydrated castor oil, trimethylolpropane and phthalic anhydride, and (b) a resin obtained from (i) methylmethacrylate,n-butylacrylate styrene and N-butoxymethylmethacrylamide, (ii) styrene, methylmethacrylate and N-butoxymethylmethacry]- amide or (iii) styrene, butylacrylate, methylmethacrylate, acrylamide, acrylic acid, butanol and paraformaldehyde, wherein the N-alkoxymethyl carboxylic acid amide groups are formed in situ. The condensates may be combined with pigments and optionally melamine resin to give paints.
