Abstract

1423788 Regulating flow to tubular extrusion dies BONE CRAVENS Ltd 3 Oct 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 51390/73 Heading B5A Parisons 10, of molten P.V.C. material, are extruded for blow moulding from a plurality of die heads 2 which are each supplied from an extruder 1, via a duct 3, and the rate of extrusion from each head 2 is controlled by cooling each duct 3 externally to produce a frozen layer 13 of the material, extending towards the centre of the duct to define a Venturi shaped aperture through which the molten material flows under laminar flow conditions. A boundary layer of more highly viscous material is also formed between the molten and frozen material. The cooling of each duct 3 is effected by a surrounding water jacket 5, through which cooling water circulates at a rate which is variable by a needle valve 8. The water circulation is introduced after the commencement of extrusion, for the ducts from which extrusion is at a higher rate. In combination with the layer 13, the duct crosssection may be distorted to introduce a further flow restriction.
