Abstract

1423420 Cracking; gas manufacture MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 16 Aug 1973 38788/73 Heading C5E Useful components are recovered from synthetic polymer waste by heating it to yield gaseous components and a residue, using the residue as fuel for the heating, cooling the gaseous components to separate high-boiling materials that are returned to the heating step and then cooling further to recover a liquid product. As shown, the waste is crushed at 1 and fed to a primary decomposer 4, heated by waste heat from the secondary furnace 5, the waste being moved by a screw conveyer at such a speed that it melts while still in the primary decomposer, and then passes to the secondary furnace 5 which contains a constant-level bath of molten polymer heated by the fire-tubes 6. Gaseous products are cooled at 7 and the less volatile components returned to the bath by way of tray 8. Heavy residues from the bath are drawn off at 9 and filtered at 11. The fitrate is returned to the bath by ports 13, and the solids, mostly carbon, are led to furnace 14 which supplies the hot blast for the tubes 6. The gas from 7 passes through cyclone 17 to cooler 18, which may be a Venturi scrubber, from which an oil-water mixture goes to separator 19. The water is recycled by pump 20 and the oil collected at 21. Uncondensed gases are further scrubbed at 22 and 23 to free them of HCl, the recovered liquids being separated at 26, hydrochloric acid being collected at 27 and oil at 21. The remaining gas is neutralized at 28 and passes to gasholder 29, from which it may be fed as fuel to the furnace 14.
