1423102 Endoprosthetic hip joints FRIEDRICHSFELD GmbH STEINZEUG-UND KUNSTSTOFFWERKE 18 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 11929/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division E2] An endoprosthetic hip joint acetabulum for cement-free implantation by screwing comprises a body 2 of aluminium oxide ceramic having a hemispherical cavity 1 and a cylindrical threaded part 3, longitudinal grooves (4) (Figure 2-not shown) interrupting the threaded part 3 for filling with bone chips for promoting the growth of live bone into the grooves and preventing rotation of the acetabalum, the height h of the body being smaller than the diameter d 2 of the hemispherical cavity, and the diameter D of the threaded part being smaller than the largest diameter d 1 of the body but larger than d 2 . Dovetailed grooves 6 are provided on the upper surface of the acetabulum for partially filling with bone chips, and a central hole 7 extends from the upper surface to the hemispherical cavity to allow escape of air during screwing into the pelvic bone. A hole may then be bored upwards into one of the grooves and a ceramic pin inserted to further prevent rotation of the acetabulum.
