Abstract
1422863 Jointing by tube expanding KOTTHAUS & BUSCH 5 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5554/73 Heading B3J The end of a tube 21 is expanded in a bore in a tube plate 22 by subjecting the tube-end to differential rolling along its length. The expanded tube may be a sliding fit in the plate or, in the case of a heat exchanger, fixed therein. A tube of two different materials may be used. The two end zones of a tube-end may be expanded by 10% and the central zone by 20%. Alternatively, four zones may be expanded in increasing steps (III), or the expansion may increase uniformly over the length (IV) or from each end to a central zone (V). A roller-expander for performing the method may have a different adjusting member, e.g. a potentiometer, for controlling the expansion at each of ten zones, The stages may thus be controlled automatically and indicated by illuminating a lamp for each stage. A selector switch may permit selection of the desired combination of stages, and a repeater switch may allow repetition of a stage after reverse running and an adjustment pause at the end of a stage. A simple adjusting member can be moved mechanically as a function of a curve. A recording instrument may record a curve of each operation for purposes of comparison. The operation may be controlled by a computer.
