Abstract

1422816 Collapsible steering columns DAIMLER-BENZ AG 9 Oct 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 47100/73 Heading B7H A collapsible vehicle steering column includes a shaft portion 1 connected via a plastically deformable member 2 to a steering wheel 3, the resistance to deformation of the wheel 3 being greater than that of the deformable member 2 and the. shaft portion being at substantially 15 degrees to the horizontal. Shaft portion 1 is connected by a universal joint 5 to. a further shaft portion. 6 which is joined by a further joint 7 to a steering gear for the wheels. The geometry of this. arrangement is such that on frontal collision of a vehicle in which the column is mounted the shaft portion 1 is moved angularly towards the horizontal from its normal mounting position.
