Abstract

1422530 Styryl derivatives of 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene CIBA-GEIGY AG 21 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 59181/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 , R<SP>1</SP> 1 , R 2 , R<SP>1</SP> 2 , R 3 and R<SP>1</SP> 3 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl part, an alkoxy group with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a phenyl-alkoxy group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkoxy part, an alkenyloxy group with 3 or 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, a sulpho group or a salt or a functional derivative of a sulpho group, a carboxyalkoxy group, a carboxyl group or a salt or a functional derivative of a carboxyalkoxy or a carboxyl group, a cyano group or a sulphone group. The term "functional derivatives" is defined to mean esters and amides. Such compounds are prepared by reacting about 1 mol. of a compound of the formula with about 1 mol. of a compound of the formula and about 1 mol. of a compound of the formula in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 and R<SP>1</SP> 1 , R<SP>1</SP> 2 and R<SP>1</SP> 3 are as defined above, one of the symbols Z 1 and Z 2 denoting a O = CH- group and the other denoting one of the groupings -CH 2 PO(OR) 2 , -CH 2 -PO(OR)(R), -CH 2 PO(R) 2 or -CH=PR 3 where R represents an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical. The examples describe the preparation of numerous compounds of the invention in which the terminal phenyl groups are substituted by one or more radicals representative of which are Cl, COOCH 3 , NaO 3 S, CN, CH 3 , OCH 2 COONa, OCH 3 , COONa, SO 3 C 6 H 5 and SO 2 NH 2 . The products are employed as optical brightening agents for organic materials, e.g. bleached cotton and wool fabrics, polyamide fibre fabric, polyvinyl chloride films, polystyrene and fibres of terephthalic acid-ethylene glycol polyesters.
