Abstract

1422393 Wells &c HYDRIL CO 4 Jan 1973 656/73 Heading E1F A subsurface well apparatus for connection in a production tubing to control flow of fluid through the tubing bore has a housing 130, Fig. 1c, having a bore 140 therethrough communicating with the tubing bore, and a movable control member 163, Fig. 1B, 164 disposed in the housing bore for cooperating with a flow control device 185, Fig. 4B, introduced into the housing bore through the production tubing bore, to move the device between an open condition and a closed flowblocking condition. Flow of liquid is normally controlled by means of a ball valve 150, Fig. 1C, rotatable about pins 167f fixed to -the housing, the valve having a slotted connection with the pins such that axial movement causes rotation. The ball valve is biassed into the closed condition by means of a spring-biased sleeve 166 and is rotated into the open condition by the application of pressurised control fluid via line 122, Fig. 1B, on a piston 163 which in turn acts via a sleeve 164 on the valve seat ring 155, a line 123 being vented. In the event of a malfunction of this ball valve 150 the ball valve is locked open by venting of the line 122 and pressurisation of the line 123 to operate a mechanism 170, 171, Fig. 1B, latching the sleeve 164, and the flow control device is run into the bore 140 by means of a tool (195), Fig. 4A (not shown), which is pumped down the bore, the ball valve 187 of the device being temporarily held closed by a shear pin (295c). When the device engages a ring 175 fluid pressure forces its frame 286a and mover sleeve 288 downwardly relative to a sleeve 290, so that dogs 293 on the device engage a recess 263 in the piston 163. A pin (295) between the tool (195) and the device 185 is sheared, and venting of line 123 causes spring 163a to urge the piston 163 upwardly to move the device so that dogs (294) thereon engage a recess (140c). In operation, the device 185 is controlled by piston 163 through a pin-and-slot connection, pressurised fluid in line 123 moving the piston downwardly to open the valve 187. Reduction of pressure in the line 123 allows spring 163a to close the valve 187. If the device 185 does not function the valve 187 is rotated to the open position and the device is withdrawn by a tool (196), Fig. 7A (not shown).
