1422356 Organ perfusion apparatus VICKERS Ltd 18 July 1974 [19 April 1973] 19200/ 73 Heading A2D An apparatus for storing body tissue comprises a vessel for receiving body tissue to be stored, the vessel having an inlet and an outlet for enabling liquid perfusate to enter and leave the vessel respectively, and pump means of the kind defining a pumping passageway along which liquid perfusate is forced when the pump means are operated by a source of operating power, duct means connecting the outlet to one end of the pumping passageway and the other end of the pumping passageway to the inlet to define with the interior of the vessel and pumping passageway, a fluid circuit around which perfusate can be circulated, the pump means being adapted to be disconnected from its source of operating power when the apparatus is not in use. In an alternative form of apparatus, those portions of the apparatus in the fluid circuit that come into contact with perfusate when the apparatus is in use are constructed to be detachable from those portions in the fluid circuit that do not contact liquid perfusate, so that the former portions may be discarded. A suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises a vessel 1 for containing a kidney 2 supported on coarse filter 3. The vessel is provided with a lid, and inlet and outlet ducts. The outlet duct opens from the base of the vessel and is connected to the inlet duct via a reservoir 5 incorporating a fine filter 6, perfusion pump 7, heat exchanger 8, oxygenator 9, flow-rate meter 10, flow-control and throttle 11. The pump may consist of two compressible parallel tubes each provided with a non-return valve at each end. These tubes may be compressed and released in time with one another to provide a pulsing flow of perfusate; or one tube may be compressed as the other is released to provide a uniform flow. The pump power source 12, connection 19, cooling device 13, flow-control throttle 11 and part 23 of the manometer 14 are provided with plug-in connections and can accordingly be disconnected from other components, which other components are those that contact perfusate when the apparatus is in use.
