Abstract

1422235 Detecting notches in strips AGFAGEVAERT A G 16 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2257/73 Heading G1M [Also in Division G2] A scanning device for detecting notches 1c in advancing strip material 1, especially photographic film, comprises a reference frame provided with follower means which in use bears positively on the strip edge so as to maintain the frame in a constant position relative to the edge, a feeler 2 for entering the notches lc, means for urging the feeler 2 positively against the strip edge and means for detecting movement of the feeler 2 relative to the frame in a direction transverse to the path of the material 1. The follower means, e.g. runners 5, 6, is arranged so that, when in use with material 1 having notches 1c of a predetermined kind, it is incapable of responding to notches 1c detected by the feeler 2. In the described embodiment, the feeler 2 comprises an angled lever, one arm 2b carrying a flag 2c which closesan aperture in a diaphragm 9 until moved under the action of a spring 11 when a notch is engaged by a second arm 2a. Light from source 7 then passes through the aperture to activate a photo-electric transducer 10 and produce a signal which may serve to control strip transport and hence be used with an automatic exposure control to produce a fully automatic film printing operation.
