Abstract

1422129 Treating glass containers J D MCCALL (Owen-Illinois Inc) 22 Dec 1972 59364/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division G1] Alkaline glass on the inside of a container, e.g. a vaccine bottle or an ampoule, is treated with acid to form a neutral salt coating whose thickness is measured optically to check that neutralization has been effected properly. Light is passed through the container and is filtered to restrict it to wavelengths where the scattering or absorption by the coating is a maximum and is then incident on a light detector (see Division G1). The surface of the bottles tends to be more alkaline than the bulk. Thus after ensuring the bottle is neutralized satisfactorily the coating may be washed away leaving a new surface whose alkalinity is acceptable, being that of the bulk.
