Abstract

1422092 Filters for waveguides MARCONI CO Ltd 9 Aug 1974 [11 Aug 1973] 38141/73 Heading H1W A low-pass microwave filter comprises a rectangular waveguide coupled by slots in one or both broad walls to a parallel-plate waveguide or waveguides associated with absorptive material. In the simplest form (Fig. 1, not shown), one broad wall is provided with an array of slots spaced at intervals equal to one halfwavelength of the TE 01 mode in the parallel plate waveguide at the frequency above which attenuation is desired, the length of each slot being about one half-wavelength at this frequency. A substantial proportion of the energy propagating in any TE MN mode (M#0) is radiated by the slots. In the embodiment shown, slots are provided in both broad walls resonant at harmonic frequencies, the slots 12 in the upper wall being arranged in pairs to transmit the even harmonics, and those 13 in the lower wall being arranged in groups of three to transmit the odd harmonics. The two arrays may be staggered by one quarter-wavelength to improve the VSWR. A further improvement may be obtained by a diminution of the lengths of the slots towards the two ends of the filter. The parallel-plate guides comprise two pairs of spaced conductive plates 5. The guides include elements 7 made of absorptive material, e.g. silicone rubber loaded with ferrite or a ceramic load with carbonyl iron or ferrite. The embodiment shown comprises additionally means for attenuating the TE MN (M, N#0) modes, in particular the TE ON modes not affected by the slots 12, 13. For this purpose, each narrow wall is provided with slits 14 parallel to the minor axis, each slit being of width about equal to the thickness of the wall and spaced from the next by two slit-widths. The slits are covered by absorptive material 15, e.g. ferrite-loaded silicone rubber.
