Abstract
1421961 Removal of sulphur dioxide from gas streams ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 27 April 1973 [30 June 1972] 20140/73 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide in a gas stream is catalytically reduced using a hydrocarbon reducing agent at an elevated temperature, reaction being initiated in the presence of a solid SO 2 -reduction catalyst and also of 0À05 to 3 mol per cent of elemental sulphur vapour (expressed as S s and based on the amount of SO 2 ) that has been added to the SO 2 /hydrocarbon mixture without substantially increasing its volume, and the reaction being carried out wholly within the range 850-2400‹ F. The solid catalyst may be bauxite, alumina, silica, calcium sulphide, vanadium oxides, calcium aluminate and mixtures thereof and may be in the form of small balls or pebbles. Gaseous C 1 to C 4 hydrocarbons are preferred such as natural gas, methane, ethane, propane and the butanes. The SO 2 may be essentially pure or very dilute as in industrial waste gases. When the stream to be purified is a waste gas, the SO 2 content may be upgraded, e.g. an alkaline agent such as sodium sulphide, ammonium sulphite, a metal carbonate or magnesium oxide may be used to strip the SO 2 from the flue gas, the agent being reconstituted and the regenerated SO 2 being recovered for subsequent treatment. Another process which may be used employs a sulphur adsorber such as activated carbon to adsorb the SO 2 which is subsequently desorbed. Organic absorbing media may also be used to absorb the SO 2 which may be recovered. The product of the reduction reaction is H 2 S which is then subjected to a Claus reaction with residual SO 2 in the product stream to recover elemental sulphur.
