1421947 Control of welding torch MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 10 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 32848/73 Heading B3R In an apparatus for welding together sheet metal plates 14, 16 a traversing mechanism (not shown) advances a welding torch 12, Fig. 1, linked to a feeler roller 54 which is mounted so that its rotational axis can tilt (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) in response to planar misalignment of the plates 14, 16. Tilting of the torch takes place proportionally or equal to that of the roller. In the particularly described arrangement, roller supporting arm 40 has an arcuate slot 42, Fig. 3, in which a bearing 44 mounted on a slide 46 of the apparatus can move to allow tilting of the roller. Torch 12 is mounted on a second arm 30 which is pivotally mounted through bearings 36 on a pin 38 fixed to arm 40 so that the torch may be oscillated in a weaving motion by a motor 50 mounted on arm 40, eccentric pin 52 and bearing 53 engaging a forked portion 31 of arm 30, as well as be tilted by the movement of the roller. Means for urging the roller 54 against the plates may be hydraulically or pneumatically operated or, as shown in Fig. 2, comprise a spring 70 mounted on an adjustable rod 76 and engaging slide 46 through block 72. Cooling water and shielding gas (e.g. CO 2 , Argon) may be supplied to torch 12 through conduits 26, 24. Welding wire may be fed through conduit 22. The apparatus is suitable for MIG, MAG and submerged arc welding.
