Abstract
1421578 Automatic control of induction heating WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 26 March 1973 [13 April 1972] 14334/73 Heading G3R Cooking apparatus includes an induction heating coil forming part of a series resonant circuit in an oscillator. D.C. supply lines are switched across the coil circuit at the resonant frequency by current derived from the current in the coil, and the load current is regulated by automatically adjusting the D.C. supply voltage. As shown, a pancake induction coil 10 is supplied from an A.C. source 112 over a controllable rectifier arrangement 18 and an oscillator 16. Firing signals for the controlled rectifiers 124, 126 are produced by a circuit 30 in response to variations in load current and the Q-factor of the load circuit. Transistors 34, 40 in the oscillator are switched by a current transformer 52 in synchronism with current in the coil 10 and series capacitors 20, 22 to connect the coil in alternate polarity across D.C. lines 36, 42. A starter circuit 64 for the oscillator includes a breakdown device 70 such as a diac or Shockley diode. To ensure at least a minimum load on the oscillator, a dummy load resistor 81 is provided, and the current through either this resistor or through the coil 10 is sensed by a transformer 84 to provide a signal for comparison with a reference voltage determined by a potentiometer 170 and Zener diodes 156, 158 in control circuit 30. A programmable uni-junction transistor 210 is included in a ramp and pedestal circuit 153 forming the output stage of control circuit 30.
