1421341 Peroxysiloxanes DOW CORNING Ltd 18 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 20312/72 Headings C3S and C3T Novel organosiloxanes having in the molecule at least one unit of the formula wherein R denotes phenyl or C 1-18 alkyl, Q denotes a C 2-11 divalent radical linked to silicon through a carbon-silicon bond and composed of C, H and, optionally, ether oxygen atoms, R<SP>11</SP> denotes a tertiary alkyl or aralkyl radical having less than 18 carbon atoms or an acyl radical having less than 8 carbon atoms and a is 0, 1 or 2, any other siloxane units present having the formula wherein X denotes H, or a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical and b is 0, 1, 2 or 3, are prepared by reacting an organo. siloxane having at least one unit of the formula and optional other siloxane units of the formula with an organic hydroperoxide or peroxyacid having the formula or, alternatively, by hydrolysis or cohydrolysis of the corresponding hydrolysable peroxidesubstituted silanes. Suitable reactants R<SP>11</SP> include tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide, cumyl hydroperoxide and peracetic acid. Examples describe the preparation of Si) 15 ] 2 O and a copolymer of 99 mol per cent -MeSiO- units and 1 mole per cent units having a molecular weight of approximately 4000. Uses.-As polymerization initiators for organic resins, as vulcanizing agents for silicone rubbers and for grafting to the surfaces of free radical reactive polymers.
