Abstract

1421286 Purifying turpentine SCM CORP 29 Aug 1973 40710/73 Heading C5C A turpentine hydrocarbon fraction containing not more than 500 p.p.m. sulphur and having not more than 15 wt. per cent of light ends having a boiling point below α-pinene is desulphurized by contacting with activated carbon in a first stage until the carbon is laden to a predetermined level with sulphur compounds, then regenerating the sulphur-laden carbon in a second stage by first heating it at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to remove sorbed turpentine which is recycled to the first stage without substantially increasing the sulphur content of the turpentine hydrocarbon function, and then heating the carbon at a temperature higher than the first regeneration step to remove the sulphur compounds. The regeneration steps are carried out by injection of steam at differing temperatures.
