Abstract
1421227 Electro-physical measurements J D SKILDUM 25 April 1973 19714/73 Heading G1N The oxidation of lubricating oils is determined by measuring the skin capacitance of a sample of the oil in contact with a pair of capacitor electrodes lying in the same plane and separated by a uniform gap. A disc shaped insulating substrate 13 provided with electrodes 11, 12 in the form of a plurality of concentric ring portions inter-connected to form a continuous uniform gap 15. Ring shaped peak 19 of an electrically conductive cylindrical wall 17 holds about three drops of sample to be tested, dip 18 being provided to take any overflow and a heat sink 22 cooling the sample. The electrodes 11, 12 are connected via heat sink 22 and terminal into one arm of an H.F. A.C. bridge two of the other arms being constituted by two inductors and the fourth by a pair of parallel connected variable capacitors Fig.3 (not shown). The bridge may be phase sensitive or not, Fig.4 (not shown). In operation one of the variable capacitors which is calibrated in terms of percentage of oxidation is set to a minimum and with a good or non-oxidized oil sample in contact with the electrodes 11, 12 the other variable capacitor is then adjusted to balance the bridge. The good oil is then replaced by an oil of known degradation and the one variable capacitor is adjusted to balance the bridge and a scale associated with the capacitor adjusted to give the correct degradation and complete the calibration. An oil to be tested is placed in contact with the electrodes 11, 12 and the one capacitor adjusted to balance the bridge, the degradation being read off from the calibrated scale.
