Abstract

1420629 Communicating with the blind W A N ELLIS 3 Oct 1973 [16 Oct 1972] 47619/72 Heading G5G Reading apparatus for the blind comprises a box 1 provided with a touch button 2 furnished with a group of pins 3 movable by means of solenoids connected to respective detecting heads of a reading unit housed within the box 1. A tape, e.g. a magnetic tape or a punched tape, bearing coded information representative of Braille characters, is fed past the reading unit and controls the energization of the solenoids whereby various combinations of pins are successively projected from the face of the touch button 2 to form Braille characters for sensing by a reader's fingertip. The apparatus may also include a dither mechanism for the pins 3, an oscillatory mechanism for the touch button 2 as a whole, means for varying the speed at which successive characters are presented for reading, and a reverse winding facility for the tape transport mechanism.
