Abstract
1420514 Automatic control of speed SONY CORP 27 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 45333/73 Heading G3R A tape driven capstan motor in a video tape recorder is connected in a speed control loop having a comparator which compares the actual motor speed with a fixed frequency source during recording and during playback compares the speed of the headwheel with the linear speed of the tape to provide a reference signal for'the capstan motor control loop. It is stated that by controlling the capstan motor in this manner little disturbance is produced when editing the tape by re-recording a passage. The arrangement shown includes an helical scan tape transport and a recording head arrangement with the speed of the headwheel 18 controlled by the brake which has coil 52 connected to a phase comparator measuring the difference between the recorded signal phase and the headwheel phase as measured by pick-off 49, 51. The capstan motor speed is measured by pulse generator 39 and the output of coil 41 passes to detector 42 before being used in summation device 43 to control the power supplied to the motor. The reference signal supplied to device 43 is the output of comparator 57 which compares, when recording, the output of coil 41 with the fixed frequency oscillator 84 output. During playback switches 83, 56 are operated and comparator 57 now compares the signal replayed from tape 32 through control transducer 59 with the headwheel speed signal from pick-off 49, 51. During the edit playback condition the tape speed will be controlled as in normal playbacks and when the switches are returned to the recording position only a very small change in motor speed will be needed to correct the phase of operation. In a modification, Fig: 7 (not shown), the oscillator 84 is replaced by a frequency divider circuit which accepts signals from the horizontal synchronizing pulses or alternatively an oscillator operating at 3.58 MHz which is the colour burst frequency.
