Abstract
1420176 Polyarylene sulphide fibres PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 22 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13887/73 Heading B5B Fibres are produced from poly-(arylene sulphide) resin having an inherent viscosity (in chloronaphthalene at 206 C.) of 0À15 to 0À25 by heating the resin to a temperature 50 to 100 F. below its m.pt. in an oxygen-containing atmosphere so that it is partially cured and has a melt flow reduced to 75 to 800, and then meltspinning and melt drawing, e.g. so that the take-up speed is at least 10 times the extrusion speed. Spinning is performed through a spinneret having a hole diameter of 5 to 25 mils. Spinning temperature is about 600 F. After melt drawing the fibre is further drawn in a ratio of 3 to 8 : 1. The fibres can be made into a flame resistant and chemically inert fabric. The resin may be poly-(phenylene sulphide).
