Abstract
1420172 Coated glass container TOYO INK MFG CO LTD 15 March 1973 [15 March 1972 18 March 1972 (2)] 12662/73 Heading B2E Glass containers are treated to prevent scattering of glass fragments on bursting thereof by coating on the surface of the glass a film of a solvent-free urethane resin composition curing the coated composition thereby forming a resin film having a thickness of more than 50 microns, a tensile strength of more than 50 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and an elongation of more than 100%. The glass container may be a bottle. Preferred urethane compositions contain the following components 1 and 4 and optionally 2 and 3. 1. A reaction product of polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol and twice an equivalent molar amount of xylylene diisocyanate, tolylene diisocyanate or isophorone diisocyanate; 2. A reaction product of 1, 4-butane diol or 1, 6- hexane diol and twice an equivalent molar amount of xylylene diisocyanate, tolylene diisocyanate or isophorone diisocyanate; 3. A reaction product of a polyester polyol (obtained from 1, 4-butane diol or 1, 6-hexane diol and adipic acid) and twice an equivalent molar amount of xylylene diisocyanate, tolylene diisocyanate or isophorone diisocyanate; and 4. 1, 4-butane diol, 1-6-hexane diol or 3, 3-dichloro- 4, 4-diamino-diphenyl methane. In a typical example a liquid resin was coated on the surface of a glass bottle to form thereon a surface coated film 15 microns thick by dipping the bottle in the resin and curing the resin coating. The liquid resin was produced by reacting 45 parts trimethylol propane with 233 parts isophorone diisocyanate at 120‹C for 2 hours and then mixing the product with 500 parts of a polyol of a reaction product of 31 parts glycerine and 500 parts propylene oxide, and 0.04 parts dibutyl tin dilaurate.
