Abstract
1419985 Uses of photochromism AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 22 Jan 1973 3235/73 Heading C4S A sunglass filter comprises a solid solution of 5 x 10<SP>-5</SP> to 1 x 10<SP>-2</SP> moles per litre of photochromic material with three components each with a polynuclear conjugated aromatic ring system in a polymeric matrix protected by an oxygen impermeable barrier layer. The matrix comprises anhydride hardened epoxy, polycarbonate or polymeric phenyl siloxane resins; examples, preparation and physical properties are described. The resins are free from reactive sites, residual monomers and free O 2 capable of reacting with the photochromic material. The matrix material may be placed between glass, acrylo-nitrile polymer, PVA or PVC layers to prevent the entry of oxygen to the matrix, the edges of the sandwich being sealed, e.g. with plastics material or solder on metallized surfaces. Additional filters or polarizers may be added partly as protection against wavelengths to which the eye is not sensitive and which do not cause the retina to contract. Further hard abrasive resistant layers shaped to provide optical connections may also be added. The matrix is prepared by mixing finely divided resin and photochromic material and compression or injection moulding it in N 2 . Alternatively the resin and p.c. material are dissolved in chlorobenzene, tetrachloroethane or methyl chloride which is evaporated by freeze drying under vacuum to produce a moulding powder. Supersaturated solutions are formed by dissolving the p.c. material and one component of the resin, e,g, in benzene or toluene, vacuum evaporating and adding hardener. The matrix contains 3 components which absorb blue, yellow-green and orange-red light respectively. Photochromic compounds mentioned include benzanthracenes, benzotetraphenes, benzocoronenes, triphenylenes, naphthocoronene, and benzoperylenes. Compounds may be deuterated and have F substituents.
