Abstract

1419940 Optical scanning REDIFON Ltd 23 Nov 1972 [25 Jan 1972] 54220/74 Divided out of 1419619 Heading H4F In an optical scanning system a plane faced mirror drum 30 is rigidly mounted for synchronous rotation with a drum 31 having an equal number of convex part-spherical reflective faces centred near, but not at, the rotation axis 34, so that a static beam 38 after reflection at drum 31 and by a mirror 32 becomes a beam 38<SP>II</SP> which moves so that it remains substantially centred on the in use reflecting face of drum 30 for a line scan (the time between successive corners of drum 31 intercepting beam 38), after which it is centred on a succeeding face. As shown, beam 38 is focused at the surface of drum 31 so that the fly-back time is small. The mirror 32 is concave so that diverging beam 38<SP>I</SP> is converged (38<SP>II</SP>) so that its width at drum 30 is equal to the width of each drum face 36, and subsequently (38<SP>III</SP>) comes to a focus at a roof prism 300 serving to return the beam (38<SP>IV</SP>) to the same face 36 of drum 30. The final beam 38<SP>V</SP> therefore has an angular rotation of four times that of drum 30, and in the same sense. The fixed beam 38 which may be ultra-violet visible or infra-red, may extend from a laser or towards a fixed photodetector. The system is said to be of use in surface inspection apparatus, for visual displays or video signal generation, and in apparatus for data recording and retrieval. Tracking of moving radiant areas is also mentioned.
