Abstract
1419909 Citraconic acid and anhydride PFIZER Inc 8 April 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 15537/74 Heading C2C Citraconic acid or anhydride is obtained by heating citromalic acid, mesaconic acid, paraconic acid, 3-methylmalic acid or a mixture thereof at 160-330‹ C., removing the resultant vapour and recovering citraconic acid or anhydride from this vapour. Inert gaseous or liquid diluents may be present. In one method exemplified, a solution of the reactant in an inert solvent (water or ketone) is passed as a spray mist in an inert gas into a reaction zone containing solid particulate material (e.g. alumina); a catalyst (alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or magnesium salt of phosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, boric acid or sulphuric acid or the corresponding free acid) may be supported on the solid; the required product may be recovered by condensing in cold traps, absorption in a scrubber using for example water, or by fractional distillation procedures. Another method of carrying out the process is to place reactant in a distillation vessel, heat (preferably at 15-100 torr) and distil and collect the required product; a catalyst (as above) may be present in the vessel.
