Abstract

1419815 Vinyl benzyl ethers; addition copolymers; thickened latexes DOW CHEMICAL CO 29 June 1973 [29 June 1972 (3) 11 May 1973] 31149/73 Headings C3R and C3P Novel vinyl benzyl ethers of the formula where R denotes H or methyl, m is 10 to 100, Y denotes -OR 1 , -SR 1 , -NR 2 R 3 , -OCOR 1 , or -N(R 3 )COR 2 , R 1 denotes a C 10-22 alkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl hydrophobic group, R 2 denotes C 1-22 alkyl, R 3 denotes H or C 1-22 and the joint carbon content of R 2 and R 3 is at least 10C, are prepared by reacting a vinylbenzylhalide of the formula (wherein X denotes halogen) with a non-ionic surfactant of the formula H(OCHRCH 2 ) m Y. The novel ethers may be addition copolymerized with one or more copolymerizable monomers containing at least a water solubilizing amount of a monomer having a carboxylic, anhydride, sulphate, sulphonate, carboxamide or hydroxyl group. The resulting copolymers may be used to thicken aqueous coating compositions based on emulsions of water insoluble film forming vinyl addition polymers and optional amounts of pigments. Example (1) describes the preparation of a vinyl benzyl ether monomer from a nonyl phenol adduct of 40 ethylene oxide units and vinyl benzyl chloride; a list of further analogous products is also disclosed; further examples describe the preparation of copolymers of vinyl benzyl ether monomers with (2, 6 and 7) a mixture of maleic anhydride and styrene, (3) acrylamide, (13 and 14) a mixture of styrene and methacrylic acid, (15 and 16) a mixture of isobutylene and maleic anhydride, (17 and 18) a mixture of styrene, maleic anhydride and itaconic acid, and (19, 20 and 21) a mixture of styrene, maleic anhydride and methacrylic acid; in further examples (4, 5 and 22) the copolymers are used to thicken acrylic and polyvinyl acetate latexes, and (9, 10 and 11) copolymer thickened latexes based on acrylic, styrene-butadiene and vinyl acetate polymers are formulated into paint compositions.
