Abstract
1419073 Fuel elements UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 5 April 1973 [17 May 1972] 21979/75 Divided out of 1419072 Heading G6C A fuel assembly comprises a bundle of sheathed fuel elements 2 enclosed by a peripheral wrapper 3 and spaced apart by helically wound fins 4 of uniform radial height, the fins being arranged to make contact with the sheaths of adjacent elements to provide lateral supports and the fins of the outer elements being arranged to space the wrapper from the bundle and to provide lateral supports. A wire filler 7 extends along each outer coolant flow passageway bounded by a pair of outer fuel elements 2 and the wrapper 3, the filler 7 being of wave form and attached to the inner surface of the wrapper 3 to make support contacts with the fuel elements 2 in a series of horizontal planes, in each plane the filler 7 contacting a fuel element sheath, the helical fin 4 of the adjoining fuel element, and the wrapper 3. The wrapper 3, the helical fins 4 and the fuel element sheath are formed from stainless steel.
