Abstract

1418614 Sonar systems RAYTHEON CO 14 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 01579/74 Heading H4D In a scanning sonar system two acoustic radiation patterns respectively of a first and a second frequency are transmitted into a medium at sufficient intensity to provide, by non-linear interaction in a region common to the two respective main-lobes of the patterns, radiation of a third frequency whereas the side-lobes of the first frequency are directed to ensonify regions other than those ensonified by the side-lobes of the second frequency. Provision is made for altering the direction of each main-lobe while preserving both the common-region ensonification by the main-lobes and the non-commonregion ensonification by the side-lobes. The Fig. 2 embodiment includes oscillator 56, signal generator 54 and mixer 58 for providing transmission frequencies F 2 and F 1 +F 2 , where F 1 (#F 2 ) is a pulsed frequency sweep. After clipping at 64, 66, these frequencies are chopped at 68, 70 to give pulse trains which are fed through shift registers 72, 74 having multiple outputs which provide selectable delays. The delayed signals are fed via switches 84, 88 to individual transducers in a phased array 22, the switches being controlled by a computer 76 to select the delays appropriate for any given transmission direction. The frequency F 2 is transmitted by transducers A 1 - An in the array; the frequency F 1 + F 2 by transducers B 1 - B n . The A and B transducers are randomly interspersed. Echo signals at the difference frequency F 1 (i.e. the above-mentioned third frequency) are received by hydrophone 40 and fed to a CRO display 118, or to earphones or (to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio) are digitally correlated at 120 with a replica of the F 1 signal from generator 54 prior to display at 118. A ship's gyro 82 is linked to the computer 76 to provide stabilization of the transmission direction against pitch and roll of the ship. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), each transducer in array 22 is energized by both the frequency F 2 and the frequency F 1 +F 2 .
