Abstract

1418572 Benzoxazolylstilbenes CIBA-GEIGY AG 17 April 1973 18370/73 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of Formula I where R is C 1 -C 18 alkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, optionally bearing one or more non-chromophoric substituents, X is hydrogen, halogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, A is hydrogen, sulphamyl or halogen and B is hydrogen, halogen, or C 1 -C 4 alkyl or alkoxy. These compounds may be obtained by reacting a compound of Formula II where Z is hydroxyl, chlorine, bromine or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy with an o-aminophenol of Formula III either in a single stage at 120-350‹ C. in the absence of a solvent or using a solvent that acts as a condensing agent, e.g. polyphosphoric acid or fused zinc chloride, or in two stages, in the first of which, at 20-200‹ C., an amide of Formula IV is obtained, and in the second stage, at 120- 350‹ C., optionally in the presence of a catalyst (boric acid, boric anhydride, boron trifluoride, zinc chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid, phosphorus oxychloride, thionyl chloride or polyphosphoric acid) and of an inert solvent, cyclization of the amide occurs. The compounds of the invention may also be obtained by condensing compound of Formula V or a functional derivative (e.g. oxime, hydrazone or anil) thereof with a compound of Formula VI where Y is hydrogen, carboxyl, C 2 -C 5 carbalkoxy, nitrile or dialkyl (C 1 -C 4 ) phosphono, using a catalyst (boric acid, zinc chloride, acetic anhydride, p-toluene sulphonic acid, an alkali metal acetate, hydroxide or alcoholate, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide or alcoholate, or piperidine), and removing the radical Y where necessary. General methods are described of preparing starting materials II, III and VI are described, with a number of examples of III and precursors of Formula VII where V 1 is Cl or OH, V 2 is NO 2 or NH 2 and V 3 is an alkyl or an aryl sulphonyl group. Compound VI in which Y is -PO(OEt) 2 , A and X are H and R is phenyl is prepared by reacting the corresponding compound in which Y is Br with triethylphosphite. The compounds of the invention are used as optical brighteners.
