Abstract

1418491 Moulding BAKER PERKINS HOLDINGS Ltd 25 June 1973 [14 July 1972] 33003/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division B1] Means for preparing foundry sand for moulds or cores comprises means 12 for supplying successive batches of sand/binder mix and sand/ catalyst mix to a mixing chamber 14 having an outlet 14c for discharging the successive batches into a single core or mould box, means for purging the chamber with compressed gas between mixing operations and means 16 for controlling the number of batches and volume of each batch supplied to the mixing chamber. The units 12 are as described in Specification 1,051,651 having feed screw sections 12a, mixer blades 12b and paddles 12c. The units are supplied with foundry sand at a controlled rate by means 10 as described in Specification 1,286,162 having barrels each with a side opening surrounded by a sleeve rotatable to vary the size of the opening formed at the base of a sand hopper. The mixer 14 is as described in Specification 1,369,446 having a rotating mixing device with spring steel blades 14a which sweep the roof and walls of the chamber and blades 14b sweeping the base. The outlet 14c is in line with, or offset from, the roof inlet and is controlled by a sliding door 14d. Inlets 14e admit purging air from a ring main. The cold-setting mixture drops from the outlet into the mould or core box on a vibrating table, which may be pivoted to an inoperative position. The desired number of batches is set on a dial 16a and the weight by a dial 16b which allows a set number of revolutions of the screw (counted by a magnet-carrying disc), thus determining a weight. Thus 3 batches each of 50 lbs may be selected. In operation, a push-button causes the mixer door to be closed and the feed shafts of the units 12 rotate. When a set quantity has been fed, an electronic timer determines the opening of the discharge door of the mixer. The quantity dial is then automatically reset and the batch dial advanced. Timing means then control the purging of the mixer, the closing of the mixer and the sequential supply of further batches.
