Abstract

1418391 Separation of platinum; palladium and gold NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR METALLURGY 2 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 165/73 Heading C1A Aqueous feed solutions containing complexes of at least two of the metals platinum, palladium and gold are treated to separate the individual metal values by contacting the aqueous solutions with a solvent which contains tertiary amine or quaternary amine groups whereby the complex anions are transferred to the solvent phase and then stripping the complex anions in at least two successive steps in each of which different anionic complexes are primarily stripped from the solvent. Specified solvents are (C 8-10 H 17-21 ) 3 N and its methylation product and these may contain as dilutents paraffin containing 2% isodecanol, an aromatic hydrocarbon or methyl isobutyl ketone. Stripping may be effected (1) first with a dilute perchloric acid or sodium perchlorate solution to remove primarily Pt, secondly with a concentrated perchloric acid or sodium perchlorate solution to remove primarily Pd and thirdly with with a sodium carbonate solution to remove primarily Au or (2) firstly with a thiourea solution to remove primarily Au and Pd and then with a perchloric acid solution to remove primarily Pt; the thiourea strip may be treated to convert thiourea complexes to chloro complexes which are re-extracted with an amine solvent which is first given a perchloric acid strip to remove Pd and then given a sodium carbonate strip to remove Au or (3) firstly with a thiocyanate solution to remove primarily Pt and then with a thiourea solution to remove primarily Pd and Au. The feed solution may be pre-treated with an ion-exchange resin which absorbs the precious metals and gold whilst leaving the base metals in the solution. The metals may be recovered from this resin by elution with a thiourea solution and the thiourea complexes so obtained converted to the chloro complexes prior to being treated by the process of the invernion. Palladium may be removed from the strip solution by sparging with ethylene, platinium by sparging with hydrogen and gold by treating with oxalic acid.
