Abstract
1418350 Rotary positive-displacement machines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 1 Oct 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 45763/73 Heading F1F An oil seal assembly for a rotary internal combustion engine comprises an annular sealing member 34 located in an annular groove 24 in an axial end-face of a rotor, and a resilient member 36 for urging sealing member 34 against the adjacent housing side wall 14, this resilient member also serving as the seal between the sealing member 34 and groove 24 by sealingly engaging the axially outwardly facing bottom surface 38 of groove 24 and the axially inwardly facing surface of the seal member 34. Resilient member 36 comprises an undulating annular spring 48 embedded in an annular elastomeric member 50 whose axially facing surfaces are substantially flush with the crests of spring 48 which are preferably covered by the material of the elastomeric member. Radially inner and outer cylindrical surfaces 45, 46 of sealing member 34 assist in locating resilient member 36. The elastomeric material may be softer and the axially facing surfaces thereof undulated in opposite manner to spring 48 Fig. 6 (not shown), these surfaces being "flattened" in use to perform their sealing function. Holes may be formed in the spring crests for connecting elastomeric material on opposite sides of the spring Figs. 7a and 7b (not shown).
