Abstract
141,831. Arter, W. Feb. 8, 1919. Disk apparatus.-In a grinding-machine of the kind having a number of grinding-elements, whereby the exterior and the interior of the work may be ground at the same time, a main grinding-element and an auxiliary grinding-element are provided, and, according to the invention, the auxiliary grinding-element is adapted to be reciprocated by power on a turret portion which may also be reciprocated in any direction. The machine comprises a base 15 carrying a pivotallymounted workhead 17 and a main grinding- element comprising a grinding-wheel 22 carried in a bearing-bracket 23 mounted on a plate 24 slidable transversely, by hand-operated means, on a plate 25 mounted on a table 28. The table may be reciprocated parallel to the axis of the work spindle 18 by means of a rack 30 and a pinion 31, Fig. 6, reversal of the motion at the ends of the stroke being brought about by means of the usual mechanism, comprising two bevel-pinions 48<a>, 48<b>, Fig. 1, mounted loosely on the driving-shaft 47 and adapted to be engaged by a clutch sleeve 50 slidably keyed to the shaft and operated by a lever 53 when the upper end of this is engaged by dogs 52a, 52b on the table. The bevel-pinions are in engagement with a bevel-wheel 49, which is in driving engagement, through spiral gears 58, 59, Fig. 10, with a shaft 60 carrying a spiral gear 39, Fig. 6, in gear with a spiral gear 38 carried by a sleeve 37 loosely mounted on the shaft 35 of a. hand-wheel 41. This shaft carries a bevelgear 34 engaging a bevel-gear 33 on the shaft 32 of the pinion 31, and also has secured thereto a clutch ring 36 adapted to be expanded, by endlong movement of a clutch thimble 40 operated bv a lever 42, to lock the ring to the gear 38, whereby the automatic movement of the table becomes operative; disengagement of the clutch permits of hand operation of the table. The auxiliary grinding-disk 61 is mounted in a bearing-bracket 62 carried by a plate 63 slidable on an intermediate plate 67, Figs. 4 and 5, and having on its underside a rack 64 engaged by a pinion 65 to which a reversing rotary motion may be given. The plate 67 is slidable, in a direction at right-angles to the motion of the plate 63, on a turret base 69, or the plate 67 may be made in two parts of which the upper part may be adjusted angularly in relation to the lower part, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, whereby the direction of reciprocation of the plate 63 may be set at any angle to that of the plate 67. The turret base 69 carries a rack 70 in mesh with a pinion 71 and may be set in any angular position on the machine base by clamps 72. To the intermediate plate 67 is attached a housing 73 in which is mounted a hollow sleeve 74 having teeth at its upper end to form the pinion 71 and secured to its lower end a worm-wheel 75 meshing with a worm 76 connected to a flexible shaft 77, Fig. 10. Within the sleeve is rotatably mounted a shaft 78 having at its upper end the pinion 65 and at its lower end a worm-wheel 79 in mesh with a worm 80 secured to a flexible shaft 77<a>. The other ends of the flexible shafts are attached to shafts which may be rotated by hand-wheels 82, 82<a> respectively, or by spiral gearing 84, 84<a> from the shaft 60, clutches similar to that described above being provided on the shafts; automatic reversing motion may thus be transmitted to the flexible shafts and to the pinions 65, 71. In operation, the turret base 69 being clamped to the machine base, the pinion 71 travels to and fro along the rack 70, carrying therewith the intermediate plate &c., and rotation of the pinion 65 moves the rack 64, and with it the grinding-wheel, to and fro on the intermediate plate.
