Abstract

1418227 Coated fabrics CARL FREUDENBERG 12 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972] 57573/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A fabric impregnated with a bonding agent comprises a plurality of superimposed layers of fabric, the fibres in each layer having a general direction in the plane of the fabric which is different from that on the or each adjacent layer, wherein there at least two adjacent layers with different fibre compositions, one surface of the fabric carrying a coating of a thermoplastic adhesive. The fabric preferably comprises three layers, the general direction of the fibres in the outermost layers being the same, the general direction of the fibres in the middle layer being from 45 to 90‹ to the direction of the fibres in the outer layers. The fabric may be produced on an installation consisting of three roller or flat cards, two of which supply fleeces in which the fibres extend in the same direction i.e. the direction of production and the third of which supplies a fleece which is cross-lapped as the middle layer between the other layers, the resultant tri-layer composite being impregnated with a liquid (e.g. foamed) binder and dried. Suitable fibres for the fabric are of cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, regenerated cellulose, polynosic, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile. The binder may be a polyacrylate, a carboxyl group containing acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer or an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer which is self-cross-linking in an acid medium. The adhesive coating may be of polyethylene, polyamide, polyurethane or PVC and may be applied in a geometrically regular or irregular pattern e.g. by printing a pattern of dots.
