Abstract
1418106 Ultrasonic pulse-echo systems; piezoelectric transducers; acoustic horns REPUBLIC INDUSTRIES Inc 4 April 1973 16046/73 Headings H4D H4J and H4X [Also in Division G4] A system for automatically operating one or more doors comprises an ultrasonic transducer for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves and a source of low frequency pulses of ultrasonic energy coupled to the transducer, ultrasonic energy reflected by surfaces, for example persons, being detected by a circuit which comprises an amplifier, an automatic gain circuit controlled by an integrator, and means for discriminating against false returns; the detection circuit produces a control signal which opens or closes the door. The means for discriminating against unwanted signals may comprise a range gate circuit and a logic circuit arranged so that the control signal is produced only if the output signal exceeds a threshold signal on two out of three successive pulse cycles. Means may also be provided for producing a control signal only when the energy received by the detector exceeds a threshold noise level. The system may discriminate against false returns from the transducer casing, the floor, or rain drops. As shown in Fig. 3, a transducer assembly 32 is provided to act as transmitter and receiver. Ultrasonic radiation occurs at right angles to the faces 40a, 40b of a cylindrical lead zirconate ceramic element 40 which is wrapped with an inner layer of neoprene and an outer layer of cork and neoprene and is supported by a nylon clamp. Transducer assembly 32 is mounted in a reflector housing 22 which includes beam-directing inserts 30<SP>1</SP>, 31<SP>1</SP> adjustable at 33, 34.
