Abstract

1417950 Anode for producing electrolytic chlorine DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 18 April 1974 [19 April 1973] 17107/74 Heading C7B Chlorine is produced by electrolyzing brine e.g. sea water in a flowing mercury cathode cell using as anode a Ti or Ti coated (e.g. over Cu or Al) substrate bearing on at least part of its surface a coating comprising 30 to 90% SnO 2 , 1 to 10% Sb 2 O 3 , 1 to 50% at least one Pt group metal oxide preferably RuO 2 + IrO 2 , and 0.5 to 30% TiO 2 or Ta 2 O 3 , the mole ratio of SnO 2 :Sb 2 O 3 being from 85:15 to 95:5. The anode current density is at least 6 amp/sq. in. The mixed metal oxide coating may be produced by painting or brushing with an acidified alcoholic solution of the appropriate thermochemically decomposable salts, e.g. chlorides, nitrates, alkoxides, alkoxy halides, resinates or amines, followed by drying and baking in air. Examples are K 2 PtCl 6 , H 2 IrCl 6 , RuCl 3 or RuBr3, orthobutyl titanate or TaCl 5 , SbCl 3 or SbCl 5 , SnCl 4 or dibutyl SnCl 2 dissolved in ethanol or butanol (with Hcl). The anode substrate may be foraminous e.g. an expanded Ti mesh. Horizontal, vertical or inclined mercury cells may be used, Intermediate layers as described in U.S.A. Specification 3711397 may be present.
