Abstract

1417749 Films; non-uniform cross-section UNION CARBIDE CORP 16 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 33742/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] In a process for producing pellicles of non- uniform thickness on the surfaces of mould plates positioned with respect to each other to form a passage therebetween, there is provided a pattern of non-uniform pressure within the passage and/or a pattern of non-uniform temperature on the surface of the plates so that a stream of vapours of p-xylylene monomer directed through the passage is caused to condense and polymerize on at least one of the surfaces in response to the pattern of pressure and/or temperature, to produce on at least one of the surfaces a pellicle of non-uniform thickness, the pattern of the non-uniform thickness in the pellicles being directly proportional to the pattern of the pressure and/or temperature. The non-uniform pressure pattern is primarily created by the configuration of the passage between the plates. One or more of the plates may be rotated. The monomer vapour is obtained by pyrolysis of the p-xylylene; a specific material used is chloro-p-xylylene. Specific arrangements of circular mould plates are shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the pellicles obtained when the plates are rotated have sections as shown in Figs. 2A, 3A and 4A and when the plates are stationary the sections are as shown in Figs. 2B, 3B and 4B.
