Abstract
1417259 Separating electrolytically refined metals BICC Ltd 28 June 1974 [29 June 1973] 31030/73 Heading C7B A partially refined bi-polar electrode 3 comprising a boundary portion 11 on which substantially no pure metal has been deposited is freed from the pure deposit 13 by effecting relative movement between portion 11 and the remainder of the electrode such that the pure metal starts to peel off, a separator 17 being then driven into the split formed to complete the separation. A pivoted clamp 14 may hold the electrode with a stop 16 preventing movement of the main electrode portion when the clamp rotates. A temporary support 18 may engage the electrode during separation. Separate chutes may collect the pure and backing portions after separation. Operation may involve piston-cylinder devices working automatically; alternatively the support 18 may come into operation by virtue of mechanical interaction of stop 16 with the electrode. Cu, Ni and Zn may be so separated.
